About Us

Learn About our Team & Culture.

Barras Architects, located within the heart of Lafayette, LA, has served as a local and regional architectural design firm since 1965. For a half century, the firm has upheld the philosophy that its principals, project architects, and support staff should be dedicated to sustaining a rigorous set of design principles in order to best accommodate the needs and desires of clients within a timely, and cost efficient manner. This approach has resulted in a reputation for producing carefully crafted, well managed projects, and has continued to attract clients interested in a high level of quality design and project management.
We believe in maintaining a dynamic work environment where communication and collaboration are the keys to cultivating creativity and success throughout the entire design and construction process. The open layout of our studio office promotes a frequent sharing of ideas and responsibilities between our team members. This cooperative environment, paired with the range of expertise of our staff, is crucial in our formulation of rich and well thought out design concepts. Also, we strive to maintain a strong degree of collaboration between our clients, contractors, and consultants throughout all phases of a project with the goal to maximize productivity, clarity, and efficiency while attempting to create the best possible product of which all can be proud.
Barras Architects was established in 1965 as a partnership between Robert E. Barras and Donald J. Breaux under the name of Barras + Breaux Architects. After a brief name change to Barras Architects Incorporated in 1991, the firm was restructured in 1999 with the addition of a new partner, H. Jay Mueschke of HJM Architects. The union of these two sucessful Lafayette architecture firms created the newly rebranded, Barras Mueschke Architects. In September of 2004, the firm purchased Hamilton & Associates, thus providing the office with the addition of a new project manager, Ron Lee. In January of 2011, a few months after the passing of partner and dear friend Jay Mueschke, the firm reinstated its former name, Barras Architects, with the newly created partnership between Robert E. Barras and Shannon Barras. Robert E.(Bob) Barras has been the lead architect throughout its existance. Bob celebrated his 50th year of continued design practice in Lafayette in 2015.
